The Coral
The Coral's North West background shows itself in the kind of musical heritage that the band draws on - 60s Merseybeat pop mixes with Beatles-esque rhymes with a few sea shanties and hints of Russian folksongs.Dylan, The Beatles and the Stones." The band members met at school in Hoylake back in 1996, learned to play their instruments together, then started writing their own music

Locals made good - The Coral. Sea shanties and Russian Dancing, The Album is good and look out for a film crew near you when they start production of the eagerly awaited 'Lazy Rider'. A short film about Hoylake ostensibly in the style of ' Easy Rider' - but basically just the lads messing around on some clapped out BMX bikes and who said Hoylake was just plain boring?!
Stan Boardman
Morecombe and Wise did not actually meet in Hoylake. However,Morecombe won a talent contest in Hoylake. The first prize was an audition in the Jack Hylton show. Ernie was already appearing in this show. That's how they met as we understand it
Chris Boardman during his olympic gold medal win in the 1992 olympics, was shacked up in a house in walker street. Glenda jackson also lived in Alderley road.
The Bird family of Hoylake provided the coxswain and crew members of the "Hoylake Lifeboat" for many years and possibly still do. Whilst Glenda Jackson may have become famous through the arts and laterly politics I dont think she did anything for the town which could rival the achievements of this local family some of whom are, or were, related to her. That 'Women In Love' film that Glenda starred in, was not too bad though, especially the open fire love scene

Julian Lennon, went to Kingsmead School in Hoylake (can anyone remember him?) Whilst attending Kingsmead Boarding School in 1975 Julian Lennon become close friends with Justin Clayton. It was here that they learned to play rock and roll guitar thanks to the gym teacher, Mr Wynn. While at the school Julian and Justin formed a band. Julian played a Les Paul copy, a christmas present from his dad when Julian was 11. He now has a bar in Puerto Portals on the island of Mallorca, called 'Red'.  Julians mum Cynthia Lennon lived in Hoylake at the outbreak of the Second World War. She was born as Cynthia Powell in Blackpool on 10 September 1939 Cynthia Powell grew up first in Liverpool before moving to Hoylake. She has two elder brothers, Tony and Charles.

The Arc Band are on the way up as are the Mowgli Band.

James Bond came from Hoylake
Daniel Craig is unveiled as the sixth James Bond... on a Royal Marine speedboat on the Thames The 37-year-old actor arrived in true 007 style to make the official announcement that he would be the next movie superspy and he is to be the first Blond Bond. A beaming Craig was asked how he was feeling about his new role as he walked up the gangplank to HMS President. Craig replied "I'm speechless at the moment."He said he was always confident he would win the coveted role after the producers spent 18 months looking for a new star.  "I had a confidence about it. I felt good about it," he said."Casino Royale will have all the action, suspense and
espionage that our audiences have come to expect."Craig follows in the footsteps of Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan in one of the biggest roles in show business.
Daniel Craig was born in Chester and grew up in Hoylake, Wirral. He was a reluctant star and had to be forced to audition for his first school play, his former drama teacher said. Brenda Davies was working at Hilbre High School when 'Danny' Craig walked into a casting session for a production of Oliver in 1981.She said "Danny had tagged along with a friend who was auditioning for a part in Oliver. He just wanted to stay to watch his friend, and had no interest in auditioning. But I told
him he could only stay if he auditioned too."He was adamant he wouldn't and my jaw nearly hit the floor when he eventually got up on the stage.
"He had such timing and range, and he had stage presence for a 13-year-old. But if you'd asked me then if we'd had the next Bond on our hands - I could only have told you then he had the potential."Craig left Wirral and went to London at the age of 16. He got into the Guildhall drama school at his third attempt, and his contemporaries included Ralph Fiennes and Ewan McGregor. His first major role was as Geordie Peacock in the drama Our Friends In The North. That followed with a role in Tomb Raider and played poet Ted Hughes opposite Gwyneth Paltrow in the film Sylvia. He had an on-off relationship with troubled supermodel Kate Moss, and has also been linked allegedly to actress Sienna Miller, his co-star in British gangster film Layer Cake.

One of The Wirral Peninsula's most well know faces is Andy McCluskey from OMD is from Meols. Famously, to those old enough to remember OMD had a track called 'Red Frame White Light' which referred to the Public Telephone Box between the church and the Railway Inn. Hidden within the lyrics was the telephone number of the telephone box. OMD's worldwide appeal was such that fans would call the telephone number from all over the world.

ORCHESTRAL MANOEVRES IN THE DARK
(local lads made good)

Featuring the core members Paul Humphreys and Andy McCluskey, the Merseyside synth-pop group Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark formed in the late '70s. Humphreys and McCluskey began performing together in school, playing in the bands VCL XI, Hitlerz Underpantz, and the Id. After the Id split in 1978, McCluskey was with Dalek I Love You for a brief time. Once he left Dalek,he joined with Humphreys and Paul Collister to form Orchestral Manoeuvers In The Dark. The group released their first single "Electricity" on Factory Records; the record led to a contract with the Virgin's subsidiary DinDisc. Using their record advance, McCluskey and Humphreys built a studio, which allowed them to replace their 4-track recorded with drummer Malcolm Holmes (formerly of the Id)and Dave Hughes (formerly of Dalek I Love You). In 1980, the group released their self-titled debut album. Organisation appeared the same year which featured the U.K. Top Ten single"Enola Gay" Hughes was replaced by Martin Cooper soon after its release. The band's next few albums -- Architecture and Morality (1981), Dazzle Ships (1983),Junk Culture (1984) -- found the band experimenting with their sound, resulting in several U.K. hit singles. Recorded with two new members, Graham and Neil Weir Crush, their most pop-oriented album, found more success in America than in Britain, as the single "So in Love" hit number 26 on the charts."If You Leave," taken from the Pretty in Pink, soundtrack was their biggest American hit, climbing to number four in 1986.
The Pacific Age was released the same year, yet America was the only country where it was popular. Shortly after its release, the Weir brothers left the band, followed by Holmes, Cooper, and Humphreys.McCluskey continued with the band, releasing Sugar Tax in 1991 in the meantime,Humphreys formed the Listening Pool. After Sugar Tax failed to gain an audience, Orchestral Manoevres in the Dark returned with Liberator in 1993, which also was ignored. It was followed three years later with Universal. The OMD Remixes appeared in 1998.
